Short implant and its width?

Hello everyone ! For premolars and molars where there is not adequate length available may be due to IA nerve location or sinus and the only implant that we can use is 8 mm length what are the chances of its success. In school we were taught length of implant doesnt matter . If we select a short implant then do I have to use a wider implant . What should be the minimum width of implant if I use a 8 mm length implant?
Thank you!

I was trained 20 years ago and we were routinely using 10mm implants as our “short” option and it was determined that these 10mm fixtures had the same success as the longer fixtures. Later I realized that our 10mm fixtures had a 2mm polished collar which never integrated so that left our effective implant length at 8mm of integratable surface. Now with platform switching and surface treatment to the top I think it is safe to assume that an 8mm fixture is the same as the 10mm fixture of old. I believe that an 8mm fixture is normal length regardless of the diameter so in your case I would not deviate from placing an 8mm fixture of regular diameter for the case.

Thank you for your reply!

Scotty is correct on both counts. We ran this thru AI, and you can see the summary of the research Short Implants: Are they effective?. As far as your question about the proper width, this is what our AI had to say: Minimum Width of Implant in Molar Region?

When it comes to consider implant length and width one consideration would be the area of the connection to the bone, but sometimes it is a less important consideration!
The more important consideration, would be, how much bone is left on the implant area to support the implant!
It is a confusing issue, we tend to believe that mastication forces are supported by the implants, this is a misconception, the truth is that mastication forces acting on the implant that delivers the mastication forces to the Bone.
So the most important consideration would be: how much bone we have to leave in the area to support the implant that support mastication forces!

I have a few cases 3 years plus of 4.6x7.5 mm implants holdiing 3 unit bridges. So, has mentioned above I think it is more about the bone.
