OsseoSeal Membrane placement: sticking to instrument?

OsseoSeal is a flexible collagen membrane, that when hydrated drapes, with intimate adaptability to the graft material and surrounding native bone. Basically, when hydrated it “sucks-down” over the area and creates a great seal over the graft and surrounding bone.

For that reason, OsseoSeal is not necessarily an appropriate membrane to use when “tucking” is needed, in the manner described. In those situations, you may want to use a stiffer membrane, like Neomem. Please see When do you use OsseoSeal vs other collagen membranes? for a longer explanation on this topic.

In addition, because of OsseoSeal’s amazing draping and adhesive qualities when hydrated, it is important to use a 2-step instrument method when placing OsseoSeal:

  1. Dry instrument (e.g. plier/forcep) to place and anchor (remember to place the membrane when dry), and
  2. A Wet instrument (e.g. periosteal elevator) after hydration to better position the membrane on the site.
